Dear Parents and Guardians:
We are pleased to offer the Preliminary SAT (PSAT) to all students in grades 9-11 on Wednesday, October 16, 2019. The PSAT is an excellent opportunity for students to practice and receive feedback on the knowledge and skills that are essential for college and career readiness. GHC is one of the few schools that offers the PSAT to all students during school hours - and covers all fees associated with the test. While students in grade 9-11 are taking the PSAT, students in grade 12 will have the opportunity to participate in Senior Day at Six Flags Magic Mountain theme park on October 16.
Many colleges consider a student’s performance on these tests to be the second most important factor (after a student’s GPA) in their admissions decisions. We believe that with multiple opportunities to practice for these tests, students will earn higher scores and become stronger candidates for college admission.
Granada Hills Charter students have been very successful – each year GHC students score significantly higher on college entrance exams than their peers in neighboring schools, California, and worldwide.
By taking the PSAT, students have the opportunity to enter the National Merit Scholarship Program – a program that annually awards over $30 million in scholarships through partnerships with corporations and business organizations.
Khan Academy has partnered with The College Board to develop a free, personalized practice program for the SAT – this is also an excellent resource to prepare for the PSAT. All GHC students can access this resource at Khan Academy SAT prep.
All students in grades 9-11 are expected to be arrive promptly at school on October 10 for PSAT pre-administration and on October 16 to take the exam. Absences on the PSAT pre-administration and testing days will be counted towards the absence policy just like any other school day. The school will follow special bell schedules on these days – all students should plan to report to their homeroom by 8:27 a.m. Testing homeroom assignments will be posted on the wall of the administration building. Please see the special bell schedules below. PSAT is a timed test, and students must arrive on time and be present for the entire testing period in order to have their PSAT scored by the College Board. School cell phone policy applies, no cell phones are allowed during testing. Please refer to the College Board Student Guides for calculator use policy.
Senior Day Activities:
Students in grade 12 will have the opportunity to participate in Senior Day, held at Six Flags Magic Mountain theme park this year. Tickets are available for sale at the GHC Student Store. Seniors participating in Senior Day are to check in at the main gym at 8:27 a.m. Seniors not participating in Senior Day who come to school are to report to Highlander Hall at 8:27 a.m. for SAT practice, Naviance, and other activities that help students explore colleges and careers. No student will be denied the opportunity to participate in Senior Day due to an inability to pay. If you already purchased your Senior Day ticket but feel that you merit a refund, please let us know.
We are very pleased to offer these experiences to our students and hope that all students will participate. Score reports will be distributed during homeroom when students return to school from winter break in January. Please contact the Testing Office at 818-360-2361 ext. 407 should you have any questions.
